David, I agree completely, BMI can't tell the difference between muscle and fat. Hence my emphasis that people should be measuring body fat directly rather than weight or BMI. If nothing else, measuring your waistline is a better measure than BMI.

Thanks for your comment, I couldn't agree more!

This BMI index calculator is misleading. The relationship of weight to height is NOT reliable. You canweigh the same as someone else of the same height but your weight can be composed mainly of fat, or you can weigh the same and be the same height as someone else and your weight might be mainly muscle. Same index, different composition. Moreover, somepeople are thin on the outside and fat on the inside: visceral fat, that is, fat around the internal organs, is much more deadly than fat around the outside of the middle!

Joe,
Excellent point! For the kids, have them try the edamame with soy sauce to start, then order them an udon noodle soup. Only while in a Japanese restaurant, they get to slurp their noodles. Eating with chop sticks can be fun for children.

I have suffered pain in my jaw joints for over 20 years and have had a total of four jaw surgeries due to TMJ. After the second surgery I was told I had osteoarthritis in my jaw joints. In June of 2010 I had bilateral TMJ replacement surgery. I was told my condole had disintegrated and without the replacement surgery my jaw would fuse to my skull within six months to one year. It has been over a year since the surgery and I still frequently suffer jaw pain, especially if I try to eat anything hard or chewy like nuts, salads or other raw vegetables and fruits. My question is - since I now have artificial joints will taking joint support supplements provide any benefit?

I would also like to comment on elimination diets - For over seven years I suffered from severe pains in my leg joints/muscles to the extent that my MD thought I might have fibromyalgia. I went on an elimination diet and found that when I eliminated wheat products the pains disappeared. Now I only suffer leg pains when I inadvertently consume wheat. The elimination diet has made a HUGE difference in my life!

[...] GET YOUR FISH OIL: Many studies have shown that people who eat more fish rich in long chain omega-3 oils (such as salmon, sole, trout, and sardines) have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Other recent trials show that brain function quickens with regular intake of these precious oils. To benefit, you need at least 2-3 servings of cold water oily fish three times per week. If you don’t eat these types of fish this often, then fish oil capsules can have the same benefit. Not only is fish oil good for your brain, it also helps prevent heart attacks and strokes, and decreases joint pain too. Unfortunately, many cheap sources of fish oil are rancid, don’t contain adequate EPA and DHA, and many may even be harmful, so I strongly encourage you to pick your fish oil carefully. For tips on finding good quality fish oil: click here for more on fish oil. [...]
