Calcium and magnesium are essential minerals, necessary for blood pressure control, gastrointestinal function, bone health, weight control, muscle function, and many other essential aspects of health.
Sadly most Americans do not meet their calcium or magnesium needs, resulting in multiple health problems. WARNING! Taking calcium supplements without “adequate” magnesium will worsen magnesium difficiencies and can cause constipation, heart arrhythmias, and rarely death.
Generally speaking, when taking a calcium supplement, always aim for a 2:1 or 3:1 calcium-magnesium intake ratio. Many forms of calcium and magnesium are poorly absorbed, some have contaminants (such as lead), and many cause gastrointestinal distress; so the type of calcium and magnesium you take makes an enormous difference.
